A FLOOD OF EVIL … update on the sequel

At this point in my draft of the sequel to A FLOOD OF EVIL (late 1937), Berthold & Anna are precariously positioned between Reinhard Heydrich, head of the Gestapo, and Hjalmar Schacht, who is on the verge of initiating an undercover movement to eliminate Hitler.

General Ludwig Beck, Chief of the German General Staff, prepared an extended critique of Hitler’s plan, arguing that Germany was not ready for a major war.

Berthold produced a copy of General Beck’s report, which Schacht read with great care, often turning back and forth to connect Beck’s various points.
“This is remarkable,” Schacht said when he finished. “Do you think Beck’s views have any chance?”
“No more,” Berthold said, “than your absolutely correct evaluation of the economic devastation Hitler is producing by focusing solely on rearmament. The Fuhrer has not been known to change his mind on any of the issues central to his agenda, which in turn has not changed since 1923.”
“So the only way to change the agenda is to change the Fuhrer,” Schacht said.

Thanks. At services this morning, the person who gave the d’var talked about the bombing of Hiroshima seventy years ago tomorrow. He mentioned that Germany had begun working on building an atomic bomb in the late 30s, but the project was not pushed because Hitler expected to have a quick victory using pretty much conventional war methods. By the time the US dropped it, the war in Europe had been over for almost four months. Enrico Fermi, an important voice in the development of atomic power, fled Italy because his wife and children were Jewish.If you would like a copy of the d’var, let me know.
